    How completely an engine burns fuel leaves a trace in what it exhausts. Read carefully, that trace reports on efficiency.

    EPA-certified baselines as the reference line

    Every engine family carries a certified baseline. That baseline is the line we measure against, engine by engine.

    Identified opportunity as the result

    The distance between the reading and the baseline is identified opportunity. Fuel that could be recovered, quantified as a gross figure.

Conceptually, a reading sits somewhere relative to the certified baseline. The nearer to the line, the more completely fuel is burning. The gap is the opportunity. This figure is illustrative, not a measurement.
